If you are struggling to get a good gauge on where your students are at in their understanding, mini whiteboards can really help. Create some questions when planning the lesson, to check in at the start, middle and end of a lesson, and use whiteboards to get responses from the whole class. This then lets you tweak your teaching accordingly.

These boards will stand the test of time in most classrooms but if you are in a higher risk environment where things do get broken and damaged by students regularly, you may want to consider plastic, semi-rigid or flexible whiteboards.
